How You can Help RevitalizeDIP and Our Community
When we are asked “What can I do to help improve our south Mobile peninsula community?”, our first response is to help us pick up litter.
But that is not everything RevitalizeDIP volunteers can do to help our community.

When Yvette Young founded RevitalizeDIP in 2018, her primary focus was to reduce crime on our peninsula.
Her motivation to improve our community was extremely personal.
Yvette was on the phone with her mother when she heard gunfire that sounded very close to her mother’s residence.
The sound came from a neighborhood shooting. That was something she did not experience during her childhood on DIP before she left Mobile to become an FBI agent.
Yvette made a decision right then and there to take action by creating a community action group named RevitalizeDIP.
She contacted several friends who still lived in Mobile and organized a community meeting to discuss her plans with our community.
The response was almost overwhelming. Most of these meetings were packed with all chairs filled and the rest stood attentively.
During the first meeting and subsequent meetings, community group attendees brainstormed and decided RevitalizeDIP’s focus would be to reduce litter, crime and blight within our community.

- Reducing litter in similar communities resulted in beautiful neighborhoods and improved property values.
- Reducing crime obviously improves community values and make neighbors feel safe.
- Reducing blight definitely improves the appearance of neighborhoods as well as improving property values.
One of the first actions RevitalizeDIP volunteers took was to take photographs of property blight, discuss property improvements with the property owners and if no action was taken, report the property to the City of Mobile officials to see what they could do to reduce blight.
Ideas about reducing crime were discussed with the Mobile Police Department. These discussions resulted in police increasing area patrols and improving response times when crime reports were reported to MPD.
Sometime later, the 1st precinct of MPD moved to Dauphin Island Parkway.
Taking action on reducing litter was encouraged by partnering with other community action groups who already had litter cleanup campaigns scheduled and helping them with their litter abatement campaigns.
RevitalizeDIP began creating our own litter abatement campaigns as well as volunteer initiated litter pick ups.
So, when someone asks how they can help, we have several answers to their question:
- Reduce Litter by initiating your own team to pick up litter along your street and elsewhere within our community.
- Take a look at our RevitalizeDIP Litter Cleanups Map and decide where you want to pick up litter.
- Then post the following information on our Facebook members only group. Or, email your information to us at RevitalizeDIP@gmail.com so we can earn funds from Love Your Community.
